According to Hindu mythology, Devaki and Vasudev welcomed Lord Krishna, the eighth manifestation of Vishnu, into the world on Janmashtami. He was created to bring an end to Kansa, the wicked demon king who was Devaki’s brother.
Devaki and Vasudev were put in prison by Kansa because a prophecy stated that their eighth child would bring about Kansa’s demise. They already had six children slaughtered by Kansa. But a miraculous occurrence occurred after the birth of their seventh child, Balrama, and the fetus was transferred to Princess Rohini’s womb.
When their eighth child, Krishna, was born, the entire palace dozed out, but Vasudeva was able to transport the infant to Vrindavan and bring him back to the palace after trading him for a baby girl.
Krishna was raised in Vrindavan and ultimately triumphed over his uncle Kansa. On Janmashtami, worshippers of Lord Krishna celebrate the occasion of the Lord’s birth. The life and teachings of Lord Krishna serve as an inspiration for people to walk the path of righteousness, action, and devotion.
