The largest reading festival in the country, National Read Across America Day was established in 1998 by the National Education Association (NEA). With activities, collaborations, and reading materials focusing on everyone, for everybody, in the year and the program seeks to encourage young readers.

Current Theme, History, and Significance of National Read Across America Day

Whenever or everywhere, celebrate Read Across America! To encourage students to read, introduce the pleasures of literature to learners of all abilities, and create a welcoming environment for all children, NEA is thrilled to provide Read Across America year-round. The year-round program includes significant festivals of reading on March 2 and during National Reading Month in March, and you may fit learning fun into your schedule daily, weekly, or monthly.

Everyone can participate in making reading exciting for kids of all ages around the country. With proclamations and floor comments, governments, municipalities, or other elected officials acknowledge the importance of reading in their communities. Young readers are given reading challenges by athletes and actors. Even teachers and principals appear to be more than willing to turn their hair green or duct-tape themselves into a building to increase their students’ interest in reading.
