As per Hindu texts, one of the longest ancient epics of world literature, Ramayana was written by Maharishi Valmiki. The Birth Anniversary of Maharishi Valmiki is celebrated as Valmiki Jayanti or Pargat Diwas, every year. As per Hindu Calendar, Valmiki was born on the Purnima of Ashwin month. Every year on the Purnima of Ashwin month, various religious and social programs are organized in different corners of the country.

Let us tell you, it is not confirmed fully that, he was born on the Purnima of Ashwin month. As per believes, Valmiki was born to the Varun and Charsini. Varun was the 9th son of Maharishi Kashyap.

Valmiki Jayanti 2021 Date

As the Purnima of Ashwin month is celebrated as Valmiki Jayanti. This year (2021), Valmiki Jayanti or Pargat Diwas will be celebrated on 20th October.

History

There are a lot of famous stories related to him, which signifies the history of Maharishi Valmiki. One of his stories says – That his real name was Ratnakar, and he was a robber, who robbed the people passing through the forest. Once he took a sage captive and wanted to rob him. On this, the sage asked him why do you do all these things? He said that I do all this for my family. Sage asks him – Are your family members with you in this work? because the karma you are doing will give you very bad results. So if they are with you, the bad results will be distributed among all of you. On this, Ratnakar went to his house and tell his family about the whole thing, and asked them are all of you with me in this work? His family members denied and said – Why we are with you, as you are doing this whole work? After that Ratnakar realized that he is on the wrong path. He left the robbery and was engrossed in the devotion to God. He did very hard tapa of Lord Rama. He also got a boon of “store of knowledge” from Lord Brahma. Later, he wrote Ramayana.

Pargat Diwas Significance

On Valmiki Jayanti, in different corners of the country, various programs are organized. It is believed that Maharishi Valmiki wrote the first Shloka of this world. There is a famous story about Maharishi Valmiki, that when Lord Rama left Sita, he gave shelter to Sita in his hut. He was also the teacher of Love and Kusha, who were the sons of Lord Rama.

The Purnima Tithi will start from 07:03 PM, 19 October and will end on 08:26 PM, 20 October.
