Maharashtra remains the most Covid-affected state in the country. The state capital, Mumbai, is also witnessing a spurt in corona cases. Currently, there are around 87,000 active cases in Mumbai. But compared to the previous wave, this time 90 percent of the cases are coming from high-rise buildings in Mumbai and only 10 percent from slums.

According to BMC, a large number of Covid cases are coming out from the buildings in Mumbai. According to the Indian Express news, BMC data shows that there were 79,032 active cases in societies and buildings in Mumbai. At the same time, there were only 8,411 active cases in slums. This data was reported by BMC till 16 April.

Slums were the worst affected in the first wave. In June 2020, two-thirds of Mumbai’s total Covid cases were coming from slums and chawls. Population density is high in these places.

The news of the Indian Express says that 42 lakh people living in slums were in the container zone at that time, while only 8 lakh people living in the buildings were in the container zone.

BMC replaced SOP

In the second wave of Covid, BMC has changed its SOP after more cases came from tall buildings. On 5 April, Municipal Commissioner IS Chahal issued a new SOP declaring such housing societies as micro containment zones where there were more than five active corona cases.

The functionaries of these societies were given the task of following the Covid Guidelines.

More than 2 million people are living on these buildings and floors.
