Assam Earthquake Today: 5.2 magnitude earthquake hits Assam, tremors felt till Meghalaya, Bengal

Assam Earthquake Today: A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck Assam on today (Wednesday) morning, with tremors felt in neighboring Meghalaya and northern parts of West Bengal as well as up to Bangladesh.

The National Center for Seismology reported that the earthquake occurred at 8:45 am with its epicenter at Goalpara in Lower Assam at a depth of 14 km. The earthquake hit 71 km north of Tura in Meghalaya and its tremors were felt in the state as well, said Sanjay Onil Shaw, deputy director of the Regional Meteorological Center.

Due to the earthquake, people of Lower Assam districts including Guwahati and people of Meghalaya came out of their homes in panic. Tremors of the earthquake were also felt in the northern districts of West Bengal including Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri.

According to local media reports in Bangladesh, tremors were felt in Dhaka, Gaibandha, Bogra and Rajshahi etc. There was no report of any loss of life or property due to the quake, officials said.

Northeast India comes in a very vulnerable area from the point of view of earthquakes. Earthquake tremors are felt repeatedly here. On April 28, an earthquake of magnitude 6.4 struck the area.
