Travis Kalanick early life
Kalanick was fond of computers at a young age and learned to write computer code since his school. He did computer engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles but he dropped out in 1998 to start the start-up company ‘Scour, Inc.’ with his classmates.
Scour was the company that enabled users to share files or music online. It was among the first online sharing companies in the early era of the internet boom. However, the company was sued for copyright infringement by the recording and motion-picture industries. Scour filed bankruptcy in 2000 and sold off all of its assets.
In 2001 Kalanick founded Red Swoosh, which was also in the file-sharing technology business. Red Swoosh was doing a good business but Kalanick sold the company in 2007 to Akamai Technologies for $19 million.

In 2009 he cofounded with Garrett Camp his famous traveling app ‘Uber. They started with only three cars and later started expanding in overseas markets by 2012. Within three years Uber started operating in 66 countries and more than 360 cities worldwide.
While Kalanick did innovative use of smartphones, cloud computing, and GPS technology, to make the traveling experience faster and pleasant. However, their growing model faced a huge backlash from the taxicab industry. There was a huge protest against Uber in many countries. Uber faced all these challenges and survived.
Uber also launched a motorcycle taxi service, called UberMOTO, in several Asian cities.
Travis Kalanick Controversy
In December 2016 it was announced that Kalanick would be joining President-elect Donald Trump’s economic advisory council. Kalanick faced huge criticism due to various stands by Trump’s government and Kalanick stepped down from the forum in February 2017.
Another controversy Kalanick faced was when an Uber employee wrote about sexual harassment and discrimination in Uber. Kalanick announced that Eric Holder—a former U.S. attorney general will head an investigation into those charges.
Holder’s report was released to Uber’s board in June, and it stated that it “review and reallocate the responsibilities of Travis Kalanick.” The board approved the recommendations, and several days later Kalanick announced that he was taking a leave of absence and later he resigned as CEO.
In 2018 Kalanick created 10100, a venture fund. He stated that it would focus on e-commerce and real estate, with the goal of “large-scale job creation.”
