Amar Jawan Jyoti to be extinguished today: Know its history

Since the Indo-Pakistani War in 1971, a flame has been continuously burning below the India Gate, which is named “Amar jawan Jyoti”. Amar Jawan Jyoti salutes every soldier who martyred for the country.

Let us tell you, the government has decided to extinguish the Amar Jawan Jyoti on 21 January 2022, which has been burning continuously for the last 50 years. It will be merged into the National War Memorial flame. And with this, a historic journey of 50 years will end.

Amar Jawan Jyoti History

Delhi’s most famous landmark India Gate is actually a war memorial. It was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, on the order of the British government in 1921. British Government took the decision of making India Gate to pay tribute to the Indian soldiers who died in the First World War and the Third Anglo-African War. Since the Indo-Pakistani War in 1971, a flame has been burning below the India Gate, which is known as Amar Jawan Jyoti. Amar Jawan Jyoti salutes every soldier who laid down his life for India. Let us tell you, vehicles used to pass here before the establishment of Amar Jawan Jyoti in 1972.

After the 1971 indo-pak war, it was decided to establish Amar Jawan Jyoti below India Gate. It was inaugurated on 26 January 1972 by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Since then the Amar Jawan Jyoti has been burning continuously.

Till 2006, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) was used to keep them burning. Since then, Piped Natural Gas (PNG) started being used to keep the Amar Jawan Jyoti burning which has been supplied by Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL). The decision to go from LPG to PNG was made because it is safe and cheap too.
