National Water Mission: Importance, Objectives And More Details

In 2011, the National Water Mission was established. With per capita availability of water decreasing every year, dwindling freshwater tables, lengthy droughts, and floods caused by excessive rains, rainwater harvesting and conservation is a major concern for all nations.

Climate Change’s Impact On Water Resources

The Himalayan glaciers are disappearing.
Drought conditions have developed in several sections of the country as a result of a lack of rainfall.
Flooding is becoming more common as rain intensity rises.
The impact on the amount and quality of groundwater.
Sea level rise has resulted in more salty intrusion into coastal aquifers.

National Water Mission: Objectives

Using regulations, variable welfare benefits, and pricing, significantly raise water productivity by 20%.
Wastewater recovery will meet a significant portion of the water needs of metropolitan areas.
The deployment of reduced seawater desalination will meet the water needs of coastal towns.
Coordinate with the government to improve that basin-level administration policies are in place to deal with climate-related variations in rainfall and river flows.
Improve above- even below storage, as well as rainfall collection.
Use sprinklers, drip flooding, and slope and furrow watering to implement large-scale irrigation systems.

There are two volumes in the National Water Mission document. One book covers the mission’s funding requirements, as well as the mission’s research and innovation requirements, mission supervision, and the membership of the several bodies that will oversee the mission. The findings produced by six different sub-committees are covered in Volume 2 of the objective statement. The sub-committees are as follows:

“Surface Water Management Committee” Sub-Committee
“Efficient Use of Water for Various Purposes Committee” Sub-Committee
“Domestic and Industrial Water Management Committee” Sub-Committee
“Policy and Institutional Framework Committee” Subcommittee
Groundwater Management Committee Subcommittee
Subcommittee on “Planning and Management at the Basin Level”
