Annually, the 33rd day of the Counting of the Omer, the 49-day period between Passover and Shavuot, and the 18th day of the Hebrew month of Iyer is observed as Lag BaOmer by Jews community.
The day holds great significance as it is the only date during the 49-day period when any religious celebration is permitted. Therefore, weddings are held by Jews on this day, and young boys, who have crossed their third birth year, are traditionally given their first haircut.
History
From a historical point of view, various beliefs are associated with Lag Baomer. Some consider this day to be the death anniversary of Rabbi Simeon Bar Yochai, a 2nd-century Tanatic saint in ancient Judea. While another group of people believes that this was the day when the plague, also known as the Black Death, which killed more than 24,000 Rabbi Akiva’s disciples, was completely eradicated.

The most popular explanation of the origin of Lag Baomer refers to the story of a plague that resulted in the death of thousands of Rabbi Akiva’s students because they did not treat each other with respect.
Significance
Annually to observe the occasion, tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jewish pilgrims make their way to the base of Mount Meron, to pay their respects to Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai on this death anniversary. Also known by his acronym Rashbi, was a 2nd-century tannaitic sage in ancient Judea.
