Every year on November 14, which marks the birth anniversary of India’s founding prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Children’s Day is observed. The occasion known as Children’s Day is a celebration of Nehru. Nehru was born on November 14, 1889, and is known as “Chacha Nehru” in affection. He was well renowned for his love of children. In addition, he founded the Children’s Film Society of India in 1955 to produce locally produced films just for children.
India used to honor Children’s Day on November 20 till 1964. (the United Nations observes it on this day.) However, it was agreed to honor Pandit Nehru’s birthday as Children’s Day following his passing in 1964. Along with being a skilled administrator, Nehru pushed for the creation of some of India’s most prestigious academic institutions. His foresight resulted in the creation of AIIMS, IIT, and IIM.
For the youngsters of India, Nehru must have left behind a legacy of knowledge. Once he said, “The India of tomorrow will be created by today’s youth. The future of the nation will depend on how we raise them.”
There is no established justification for Nehru’s nickname, “chachaji.” But it’s stated that one of the main inspirations for this term’s creation was his love of kids. Another widely held belief is that Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi were close friends and that Nehru regarded Gandhi as his older brother. Later when Gandhi was popularly recognized as ‘Bapu’, Nehru was popularly recognized to be known as ‘chachaji’.
There is no gazetted holiday for Children’s Day. In contrast, schools host a variety of celebrations, including contests, music, and dance performances. Reverend Dr. Charles Leonard founded Children’s Day in Chelsea, New York, in 1857. Although the majority of the world’s nations observe Children’s Day on June 1, Universal Children’s Day is observed every year on November 20.
