The festival of Lohri is officially here. It is celebrated every year, one day right before Makar Sankranti. In 2024, it will be celebrated on 14 January while Makar Sankranti will be celebrated on 15 January. Earlier, there was a lot of confusion regarding the dates, but as per Drik Panchange, dates have been officially cleared. One of the most important festivals in the Punjabi- Sikh community. It is mostly celebrated in the states like Punjab, Delhi, Haryana and some parts of Uttrakhand.
The festival marks the official end of the Winter Solstice and the beginning of the harvest season in India. The festival has many names including Lal Loi, and Lohadi to name a few. It is celebrated by praying to the God of Fire and devotees seek their blessing for prosperity and good fortune in their family. After Lohri, the days start to get warmer with long days and short nights.
The word Lohri is taken from Loh meaning a tandoor or thick iron sheet which is used for cooking and in some cases warmth. Lohri is observed as the ending of winter solistics and marking the beginning of summer with long days and short nights.
It is also celebrated as the beginning of harvest season. From the god of fire, people seek blessings for a happy and prosperous life ahead.
People in their homes lit a bonfire made with cow dung and wood. The warmth and light from the fire change the vibe of the people. Prayers are offered while Parikrama, a ceremonial circumambulation is made. Many rituals take place including offering various kinds of gajak, til, peanuts as well as gur. It symbolises the bounty of the harvest.
