Study finds Covid virus can remain in the ear for up to a month after infection

New Study Finds Covid-19 Virus Can Linger in Middle Ear Leading to Otitis Media with Effusion

New Delhi, March 3 (IANS) A recent study published in the American Journal of Otolaryngology has revealed that the SARS-CoV-2 virus, responsible for Covid-19, can remain present in the middle ear for up to a month after infection. The study suggests a potential link between the virus and the development of Otitis Media with Effusion (OME) in individuals who have had a bout of Omicron.

OME is characterized by a collection of fluid in the middle ear, often causing temporary hearing impairment. Commonly found in children aged 3 to 7 years, the fluid accumulation in the eardrum can be a result of colds, sore throats, or upper respiratory infections.

Lead researcher, Chengzhou Han, from Wuxi Huishan District People’s Hospital in China, stated, “Our study highlights the potential effects of Covid-19 on the middle ear, suggesting a link between SARS-CoV-2 and OME onset.” The study conducted from January to June 2023 included 23 patients who developed OME post-Omicron infection, with 21 showing unilateral symptoms.

During the study, fluid accumulation was observed in 88.0% of ears, with SARS-CoV-2 being detected in 12% of samples taken. Researchers noted that the virus remained detectable in the middle ear nearly a month after Omicron infection, indicating the need for altered OME treatment strategies and increased vigilance among otolaryngologists.

The researchers concluded, “Our research unveils compelling evidence pointing to the potential otological manifestation of OME in the aftermath of a Covid-19 infection. These findings underscore a conceivable link between SARS-CoV-2 infection and the emergence of OME, emphasising the diverse implications of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.”
