New survey reveals gender and pay discrimination against women

Mumbai, March 6 (IANS) Women in India face pay gaps and gender discrimination at workplaces compared to men, says a survey by DBS Bank India and CRISIL. The survey, released ahead of International Women’s Day, included 800 women in 10 cities and found a 23% pay gap among salaried women.

The survey revealed that salary and career advancement are top priorities for 69% of salaried women, while 42% of self-employed women value independence and flexible work hours. Interestingly, remote working is not a high priority for most salaried women, with only 3% considering it essential.

Semi-affluent women earning between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 25 lakh annually reported an 18% gender pay gap and 12% gender bias. Affluent women with salaries ranging from Rs 41-55 lakh per year admitted to a 30% pay gap and discrimination. Many salaried women living in metros face challenges negotiating salaries, with varying responses in different regions.

DBS Bank’s Managing Director, Kishore Poduri, stated that the survey findings can help address issues faced by women in the workforce, allowing them to thrive both personally and professionally. The survey also highlighted differences in preferences for mentorship, career development opportunities, and lifestyle choices among unmarried and married women, with varying responses in different cities.

Among metro city women, 66% undergo annual health check-ups, 32% dine out regularly, and 24% spend more than four hours daily on non-office screen time. Married women tend to take more leisure trips and are generous spenders, using up a significant portion of their income on discretionary categories like travel and shopping.
