New Delhi, March 29 (IANS) Veteran actor Utpal Dutt, known for his iconic comedy roles in Bollywood, showcased a more realistic portrayal as Prof Gupta in the film ‘Guddi.’ Dutt, born on this day in 1929, was not only a versatile actor but also a teacher beloved by his students for his insights into literature and impeccable diction.

Dutt’s impeccable timing, funny intonation, and signature mannerisms enabled him to excel in comedy roles like ‘Gol Maal’ and ‘Rang Birangi.’ His ability to effortlessly transition from comedic roles to chilling villains in films like ‘Amanush’ and ‘Joy Baba Felunath’ showcased his histrionic capability and versatility as an actor.

The actor’s contribution to Indian cinema was rooted in his extensive background in theatre, where he gained acclaim both as a performer and a playwright. Dutt’s association with the Kendalls, performance as ‘Richard 3’, and subsequent tour of India paved his way into Bollywood, where he made a lasting impact in films like ‘The Great Gambler’ and ‘Inquilaab.’
