Indira Gandhi’s decision to transfer Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka sparks controversy in Tamil Nadu elections

The decision of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to hand over the Katchatheevu Island to Sri Lanka in 1974 has become a major issue in Tamil Nadu during the Lok Sabha elections. The BJP is actively addressing this issue, which has sparked protests by Tamil Nadu fishermen against the actions of the Sri Lankan Navy.

The Katchatheevu Island is a culturally significant area for Tamil Nadu fishermen, traditionally used by both Indian and Sri Lankan fishermen. However, the handover of the island has led to tensions and agitations, with Tamil Nadu politicians voicing concerns over the agreement between India and Sri Lanka.

Official documents obtained by TN BJP chief K Annamalai reveal the process of Sri Lanka acquiring the island in 1974, despite legal complexities surrounding India’s claim to sovereignty over Katchatheevu. The decision to relinquish India’s claim was contrary to the opinion of legal experts at that time.

The Ministry of External Affairs noted that the handover of Katchatheevu led to accusations of secret negotiations between Indira Gandhi and the Sri Lankan leader, and that the island was depicted as part of Sri Lanka in maps. The decision has been a longstanding issue affecting Tamil Nadu fishermen, who are often harassed and arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy while fishing in the region.
