Gujarat Day 2022: May 1 has great Importance for two of the prominent states of India: Gujarat and Maharashtra. Both states celebrate their Formation Day on this day. Actually, at the time of India’s independence, the state was an integral part of the Bombay state, but on May 1, 1960, the state of Gujarat and Maharashtra was formed by dividing the Bombay state.
According to oneindia.com, after independence, the center announced Maharashtra and Gujarat as a bilingual state of Bombay. With the aim of separating the state on a linguistic basis, Indulal Yagnik and Bhaikaka started the “Mahagujarat Movement”.
On 7 August 1956, the students of Gujarat College had come to talk to the government leaders, but there they were fired upon. In which four students, Suresh Jaishankar Bhatt, Punamchand Virchand Adani, Kaushik Indulal Vyas, and Abdul Peerbhai Vasa lost their lives.
The death of 4 students led to the ‘Khambhi Satyagraha’ on 8 August 1958. In the presence of thousands of people, a demonstration was held outside the Congress building by placing the statue of the martyrs. This Satyagraha, which lasted for a total of 226 days, further strengthened the ‘Maha Gujarat Movement’. Due to this, the government had to bow to the demand of the people, and Bombay was partitioned under the State Reorganization Act, 1956.
