Navjot Singh Sidhu resigned as the chief of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. Sidhu sent a resignation letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi and said that he will continue to serve the party. Sidhu became the state party chief in July this year.
In the letter, he further added that the collapse of a man’s character stems from the compromise corner and he can never compromise on Punjab’s future and the agenda for the welfare of Punjab.
Punjab CM Channi called an emergency meeting with all his cabinet colleagues after SINDHU’s resignation. In his earlier statement, he said that he had No Info on Sidhu Quitting and he will sit with Sidhu and talk to him.
Punjab BJP chief Ashwani Sharma said that Sidhu does what he thinks is right and he is not surprised with resignation. He further added that Sidhu did everything to grab Punjab’s CM post, but he remained unsuccessful in all his attempts.
Sidhu’s resignation has come immediately after the Punjab cabinet expansion by new chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi. There were speculations that Navjot Singh Sidhu is unhappy with the current cabinet expansion as neither he nor his supporters could enter the cabinet. There was also the news that some MLAs wrote a letter to Sidhu, saying that Rana Gurjeet Singh should not be made minister since he faced accusations of corruption in sand mining. Gurjeet Singh was earlier removed by then chief minister Amarinder Singh over the corruption allegations.
Sidhu was also upset over the entry of Aruna Chaudhary in the cabinet who is the CM’s relative. Sidhu wanted Punjab Congress Committee Scheduled Caste (SC) department head Raj Kunar Chhabewal to become the minister.
However, in his resignation letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Sidhu said that he can never compromise on Punjab’s future and the agenda for the welfare of Punjab.
