What is Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana?

Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana is the common name for the recently released central scheme, “PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijlee Yojana.” Earlier, it was popularly known as “PM Suryoday Yojana.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the roll-out of PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, the Rooftop Solar Scheme for free electricity, on February 13, 2024. This initiative was also mentioned by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her interim budget on February 1, 2024, as the Free Electricity Scheme.

Key Announcements:

  • RK Singh, the Union Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy, stated on February 2 that the Central government will identify one crore households eligible for this scheme.
  • Households consuming up to 300 units of electricity per month will be eligible and will not have to pay for the installation of solar panels on their rooftops.
  • Beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in the low-income category (with an annual income of up to ₹3 Lakhs) are also eligible.

Scheme Details:

  • Objective: Provide free electricity (up to 300 units) to one crore households.
  • Total Outlay: ₹75,000 crores.

Eligibility

  • There is no restriction on eligibility criteria for availing of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. The first one crore people will get the benefit free of cost. Others can avail of the scheme with government subsidy.

Key Features:

  1. A national online portal will integrate all stakeholders.
  2. Gram panchayats and urban local bodies will be incentivized to promote the “Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana” and spread awareness.
  3. Subsidies for rooftop solar panel installation will be transferred directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts through direct benefit transfer (DBT).
  4. Concessional bank loans will be provided to selected households.
  5. The scheme will save from ₹150,000 to ₹180,000 annually.

How To Apply Online for Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana: STEP-BY-STEP Guide

  1. Visit the official website: pmsuryaghar.org.in.
  2. Go to “Apply for rooftop.”
  3. Register on the portal by providing:
  • Your state
  • The name of your Electricity Distribution Company
  • Your Electricity Consumer Number
  • A valid mobile number
  • Your Email
  • Click enter.

4. Log into the portal using your mobile number and consumer number.

5. Fill in the form with all the required details.

6. Wait for feasibility approval from the DISCOM provider. Once approved, a registered vendor will assist with the installation of solar rooftop panels.

7. After successful installation, submit the plant details and apply for a net meter.

8. The net meter will be installed, and after inspection by DISCOM, a commissioning certificate will be generated on the portal.

9. Upload a cancelled cheque along with bank account details through the portal.

10. Check your bank account after 30 days if you haven’t received an SMS about the subsidy credit. The subsidy will be deposited as DBT.
