A news item is going viral on the internet stating that the famous tourist attraction, the London Eye, will soon be dismantled and moved to a new location, namely Loch Lomond in Scotland.

According to the well-known fact-checking site, Snopes, the viral news originated from a Facebook group @TravelScotlandGoalsGroup on March 10, 2024, stating that the Millennium Wheel, or the London Eye, the U.K.’s most popular paid tourist attraction, will have a new location.

The post also claims that the famous attraction was originally made for a northern loch but was later given to London on lease for the last 25 years.

The full post on Facebook reads:

Footage from London today as the former “London Eye” is dismantled, ready for the long journey to the banks of Loch Lomond.

Originally planned as a tourist attraction for Loch Lomond, it was leased to the City of London for 25 years, now expiring.

EDIT – just had a travel update in. The Loch Lomond Aye as it will be known will be moved through Scotland over the Easter weekend. The 2-mile-long convoy of sections will be moving at 10mph. Police have advised us to expect some delays.

They also attached a few pictures with the post showing the London Eye getting ready to relocate to Scotland.

It was quite evident that the post was fake, and the London Eye is still where it is supposed to be, i.e., on the South Bank. The photos that were posted in the group were originally from 1999 when the London Eye was being installed for the first time.

The Facebook group is known for posting fake viral news.

Earlier, they posted a claim that a group of clowns would soon be fixing the road.

The headline reads: “Scotland, famous for its potholes, glad to see the council’s now outsourcing the fixings of them.”
