Vijay Diwas is an annual celebration in India. On this day the Indian Army forced the 93,000 Pakistan Army soldiers to kneel during the 1971 Indo-Pak War. The soldiers of this Indian army, with their indomitable courage and valour, had driven out the Pakistani army.

This year Vijay Diwas will be celebrated in India on Thursday, 16th December. It is celebrated every year on the same date.

History

16 December 1971 was the day of the victory of India over Pakistan in the 1971 Indo-Pak war. At present, most people will not be aware of this, but today is a day for the country of which every Indian should be proud. On this day during the Pak-India war in 1971, India registered victory over Pakistan on 16 December and the whole of India celebrates this victory as Vijay Diwas. The Pakistan Army was defeated in the 1971 Pak-India War and 93,000 Pakistani soldiers surrendered in Dhaka on 16 December 1971. In the 12 days of the war, many Indian soldiers were martyred and thousands were injured. Lt Gen AK Niazi, who led the Pakistani army, was accompanied by the Indian Army Commander along with his 93,000 soldiers. General Jagjit Singh surrendered to Arora and conceded defeat. Let us tell you, General Sam Manekshaw was the head of the Indian Army during the Indo-Pak war. After this war, a new country emerged on the world map in the form of Bangladesh. About 3,900 Indian soldiers were martyred in this war and 9,851 soldiers were injured.

Significance

With this, India helped Bangladesh to emerge as a new country and defeated Pakistan in the war, hence Vijay Divas is celebrated as victory throughout the country.

Why do we celebrate Victory Day? India celebrates 16 December as Vijay Devas to commemorate its victory over Pakistan during the 1971 war. This year marks the beginning of the year, the 51st anniversary of India’s victory over Pakistan, which led to the creation of Bangladesh from former East Pakistan.

What is the meaning of Victory Day? The word “Vijay” means victory and hence it is also called Vijay Diwas. On this day India pays tribute to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives.
