National Patriots’ Day: Background

The National Patriots’ Day (Journée Nationale des Patriotes) is observed across Québec to honour democratic and patriotic resistance to British authority from 1837 to 1838. The celebrations of the day date back to 1937, when residents of Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu organised the 1837 centennial celebrations.

Annual commemorations were held in November around 25 years later to memorialise patriots who battled against the British colonial empire in the region. The relevance of the historical events that occurred in the province between 1837 and 1838 was recognised by the Québec government in 1982.

To honour the patriots, the government declared Patriots’ Day to be commemorated on the Sunday nearest to November 23.

On November 20, 2002, the Quebec administration introduced that National Patriots’ Day will become an annual regional statutory day on the Monday preceding May 25 to celebrate the life of the patriots. Since May 19, 2003, National Patriots’ Day has been observed as a provincial legislative holiday, substituting another vacation known as la Fête de Dollard (Dollard Day), which commemorated the 17th-century soldier Adam Dollard des Ormeaux.
