In ‘save the sparrow’ drive, painting contests & awareness programmes in Noida

In Noida, the forest department conducted an awareness programme in the Okhla Bird Sanctuary and encouraged several students from different colleges regarding the preservation of sparrows on World Sparrow Day. The event was attended by many students from Amity University and Chet Ram Sharma College of Education, they were taught the nest-making process of sparrows. The event was hosted by UP Biodiversity Board and Shewings NGO in collaboration with the forest department. The theme of the event was ‘I Love Sparrows’.

PK Shrivastava, the district forest officer, stated that World Sparrow Day is celebrated to highlight the sparrows’ houses and threats related to them. “Students and bird lovers participated in the programme. An introductory session about the life of sparrows was given. The students also watched some motivational videos on the need for the bird’s conservation and the skill of making sparrow nests were also imparted,” he further added.

Apart from that, students also took part in the painting competition along with a walking session around the sanctuary. Many do not know that Sparrows denote the region’s environmental health but their population is decreasing which is a concerning factor. The DFO stated that the number of sparrow birds in the Okhla Bird Sanctuary is currently very low. Although they never recorded the exact figures. 

Sparrows are small birds that are quite common in parts of the globe. They play a significant role in the ecosystem by eating insects and pests and saving the food sources for the other animals. But the number of Sparrows is significantly decreasing which is concerning the environmentalist across the world. There are many reasons behind the declining numbers, some factors include pollution, habitat loss, and the use of pest control factors. Lately, many changes have been made to maintain the sparrows.
