Annually, on May 18 every year, International Museum Day is commemorated all around the globe. The International Council of Museums or I.C.O.M is the sole organization behind the celebration of International Museum Day on an annual basis. The organization, ICOM started the celebration in 1977. This day is specifically celebrated to pay tribute to the community of international museums.

Museums are regarded as places of cultural enrichment and exchange. Museums help in the development of coexistence and peaceful collaboration among communities and Nations. On this day people are encouraged to visit museums. Museums are usually devoted to various fields of human endeavor like natural history, art, archaeology, astronomy, fashion, and agriculture.

The theme for 2023 International Museum Day is “Museums, Sustainability and Well Being”.

History

The International Council of Museums created the day, International Museum Day in 1977. Every year a new theme is chosen by the organization establishing it and the new theme is implemented. The focus area of the themes is usually environmental protection, cultural gaps prevailing internationally, indigenous peoples, and globalization. On this day museums from all over the world receive an invitation to be a part of the day and encourage the role and significance of museums present worldwide. Various activities are carried out based on the theme selected for the year.

Celebration

On this day, various international organizations give free passes to people to visit museums. The museums can be related to history, culture, art, archaeology, astronomy, space, fashion, farming, and law. To celebrate this day, people along with their friends, families, colleagues, partners, and children pay a visit to the nearby museums.
