She lost the race for Governor Post in 1990 but was elected to the U.S. Senate in a 1992 special election. Thus in November 1992, she became California’s first female U.S. senator. After the retirement of Alan Cranston in January 1993, Feinstein became the state’s senior senator.

She was re-elected for an incredible five times. In the 2012 election, she was elected by a record margin of 7.86 million votes. It was the highest popular vote ever received by any U.S. Senate candidate in history.

She was also the pioneer of the 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban and she also holds the honor of being the first woman to chair the Senate Rules Committee and the Senate Intelligence Committee as well as presiding over the U.S. presidential inauguration.

Feinstein also chaired the Senate Intelligence Committee from 2009 to 2015. She was also a prominent member of the Senate Judiciary Committee from 2017 to 2021.

Feinstein was the longest-serving U.S. senator from California and she also holds the position as the oldest sitting U.S. senator and member of Congress. She is the longest-serving female senator in history and the senior Democratic member of the Senate.

Before her death, Feinstein had said that she would not seek reelection in 2024. She was perpetually ill and there were reports about her being mentally fit to serve as the senator. Feinstein died in office on September 29, 2023, at the age of 90.
