Chess.com has unveiled a new 2v2 tournament that will push the limits of online chess to new heights. The event will start on February 21, 2024, and continue until March 15, 2024, with timings from 1 pm to 7 pm. How will the 2v2 format differ from conventional chess? Traditional chess is a solo and quiet endeavor, while the 2v2 format requires players to compete in pairs. The new format will also allow the audience to understand what is going on in the minds of the players since they will be discussing their moves. Chess players will also double up as streamers and content creators like GM Hikaru and GothamChess. They will also be able to communicate with their teammates.
It will herald a new era in chess tournaments, and the best players like Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana, and Wesley, alongside legendary players like Peter Leko and Pia Cramling, will be locking horns and competing for the $25,000 prize. There will be an eight-team knockout structure, and the tournament intends to bring forth both individual brilliance and team synergy.
Team Chess Battle 2024 is offering a total prize pool of $25,000, with the winning team taking $7,000. However, the prize money is only one aspect of the game; it will be a chance to permanently etch their names in the annals of online chess history. Every encounter except the grand finale will consist of two matches. The grand finale will be a four-match affair that will decide who will wear the crown in the Chess Battle 2024. The knockout format means it will be a do-or-die affair for the teams in every encounter and will multiply the excitement many times over.

The official Chess.com website has already revealed the names of sixteen players who will compete against opponents in pairs.
The teams include GM Hikaru Nakamura and IM Levy Rozman, GM Anish Giri and IM Danny Rensch, GM Wesley So and IM Alice Lee, and GM Fabiano Caruana and GM Cristian Chirila. Chess legends GM Peter Leko and GM Pia Cramling will also compete along with the commentating greats GM Robert Hess and GM Daniel Naroditsky, plus super-streamer GM Eric Hansen and his Dutch destroyer teammate, GM Jorden van Foreest.
