Wicketkeeper Gurbaz in line for debut as Afghanistan name squad for Ireland Test

Afghanistan’s Test squad for the one-off Test match against Ireland has been announced, with Rahmanullah Gurbaz earning a spot in the squad. Test regular Rashid Khan is still recovering from surgery and will not be playing. The squad will be led by Hashmatullah Shahidi and includes new additions like Ibrahim Abdulrahimzai.

CEO of Afghanistan Cricket Board, Naseeb Khan, mentioned, “This will be our second Test against [Ireland], and we are eagerly looking forward to what will be an exciting Test match between the two teams.” Afghanistan had previously won a Test match against Ireland in 2019 in Dehradun. The team has won three out of eight Test matches played so far.

The Test squad includes players like Hashmatullah Shahidi, Rahmat Shah, Ikram Alikhail, and new faces like Khalil Gurbaz and Ibrahim Abdulrahimzai. Yamin Ahmadzai and Mohammad Saleem Safi have been ruled out due to injuries. Afghanistan is also scheduled to play a two-match Test series against Bangladesh and a one-off home Test against New Zealand in 2024.

The upcoming one-off Test match against Ireland will begin on February 28 in Abu Dhabi. With an exciting line-up and past success against Ireland, Afghanistan is gearing up for a competitive match. The inclusion of new players like Rahmanullah Gurbaz shows the team’s focus on building a strong squad for future challenges in the Test format.
