PM Modi unveils 125-foot statue of Lachit Borphukan in Assam

Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a 125-feet long statue of 16th-century Ahom general Lachit Borphukan in Assam’s Jorhat district. The ‘Statue of Valour’ was unveiled at the Lachit Barphukan Maidam Development Project in Hollongapar, close to Teok area, where the Prime Minister arrived via helicopter from Arunachal Pradesh.

Dressed in traditional attire and headgear, PM Modi performed an Ahom rite for the unveiling of the statue. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma accompanied the Prime Minister during the programme. The statue, constructed by Ram Vanji Sutar, stands 84 feet tall on a 41-foot pedestal, totaling 125 feet in height.

Former President Ram Nath Kovind laid the foundation of the statue in February 2022. This event signifies the recognition and honor bestowed upon the historical figure of Lachit Borphukan, a revered Ahom general from the 16th century. The statue’s unveiling highlights the importance of preserving and commemorating historical figures for future generations.
