Lawsuit Filed Against Portland Officer for Fatal Shooting of Unarmed Black Man Due to Misidentification

A lawsuit has been slapped against a Police officer in Portland, Oregon for killing an unarmed black man.

Immanueal “Manny” Clark was standing beside his car door when he saw the police party approaching him.

Clark panicked and started to run when he was shot on his back with a semi-automatic weapon.

The lawsuit also alleged that Clark was denied immediate medical help and he was left bleeding for 28 minutes before being shifted to a hospital where he died.

According to KGW, The incident happened on 19 November 2022.

In the early hours of 19 November Police Officers in Portland, Oregon received a call of an attempted robbery from a concerned citizen.

The phone call was made by the victim from the parking lot of a Portland fast-food or SuperDeluxe restaurant on Southeast 50th Street and Powell Boulevard.

The citizen said that the perpetrators of the crime had fled in a sedan and also added that all the members were white.

The Police Officers mistakenly identified the car, Clark was travelling in and proceeded to challenge it. The car entered a church parking lot and officers boxed the car in a process known as “high-risk stop.

Clark was standing outside the door of the car and when the Police officers approached to challenge the group, Clarke panicked and started to run.

It was then that Officer Christopher Sathoff fired an AR-15 rifle three times at Immanueal “Manny” Clark as he ran from police.

The 30-year-old Black man was unarmed.

The lawsuit added that 911 calls which were made by the victim of the alleged robbery attempt had identified the sedan in which the robbers made the getaway as a gray sedan while Clarke vehicle was black.

The lawsuit added that the other occupants of the car included a Black man, a white woman and a white man.

Clark died after battling for his life for two days in a hospital.

Officer Christopher Sathoff who shot the fatal bullets was not seized and even after two years the Police are still conducting an internal investigation.

The lawsuit charged the officers of using excessive force without any provocation and causing death due to negligence.
