Mamata’s Brother Changes Tone and Decides Not to Run as Independent Candidate

Kolkata, March 13 (IANS) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s brother, Swapan Banerjee, known as Babun, softened his stance after initially threatening to contest independently in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Howrah constituency. He later withdrew his decision and pledged to settle things with his sister upon returning to Kolkata from New Delhi.

Swapan Banerjee had earlier hinted at contesting as an independent candidate against the Trinamool Congress’ official nominee, former football player Prasun Banerjee. However, he changed his mind and stated, “Right now I am in New Delhi. I will be going back to Kolkata very soon and after that I will speak to the Chief Minister. She is my elder sister and also my guardian.”

Opposition parties criticized the situation, with BJP’s former National Vice President Dilip Ghosh pointing out the lack of political ideology within the Trinamool Congress. He stated, “Those who are with the Trinamool Congress are there just to earn money through unfair means.”

West Bengal Congress President Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that the infighting within the Trinamool Congress was now extending to the Chief Minister’s own family. He stated, “Such things are inevitable when greed becomes the base of any political party.”

The turn of events in West Bengal’s political landscape has drawn attention to the internal rift within the ruling party, highlighting underlying issues of power struggle and greed. The future course of action and the impact of this incident on the upcoming elections remain uncertain.–IANS
