Murray defeats Berrettini in three sets at Miami Open

Andy Murray started his 2024 Miami Open campaign with a thrilling victory over Matteo Berrettini at Hard Rock Stadium. Murray rallied past Berrettini in a match that lasted nearly three hours, showcasing his superb court coverage and skillful play in baseline rallies.

With this win, Murray joined the likes of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal in the prestigious 30-win club in Miami. Djokovic has 44 wins in South Florida, while Nadal has 40, highlighting Murray’s accomplishment.

Berrettini, who was coming off a finalist finish at an ATP Challenger Tour event in Phoenix after a six-month injury layoff, put up a tough fight against Murray. However, Murray’s consistency and limited unforced errors helped him secure the victory.

Murray is set to face Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the next round, a player who defeated him in straight sets at the Australian Open. The upcoming match promises to be an exciting encounter between the two players who have had previous battles on the court.

In another highlight of the Miami Open, young French player Luca Van Assche claimed his first ATP Masters 1000 win by defeating Pavel Kotov in straight sets. The 19-year-old’s victory marks a career milestone as he advances to the next round to face seventh-seed Casper Ruud.

Jack Draper also had a successful start to his Miami Open campaign, defeating Taro Daniel in straight sets with an impressive performance. Draper’s dominance on serve and solid play earned him a spot in the second round, where he will face 22nd seed Nicolas Jarry in what promises to be a thrilling match.
