Mirabai Chanu narrowly misses qualifying for Paris Olympics, finishes third in group B of IWF WC

Phuket (Thailand), April 1 (IANS) Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu secured third place in the women’s 49kg group B event at the IWF World Cup, putting her on track to qualify for the 2024 Paris Games. Chanu lifted a total of 184kg after a six-month injury layoff, meeting the mandatory qualifier for the Olympics.

Chanu’s impressive performance at the World Cup has positioned her as a strong contender for the Paris Games qualification. The official confirmation will be announced after the conclusion of the tournament when the Olympic Qualification Ranking (OQR) is updated. The top ten lifters in each weight category will earn a spot in the Olympics.

Despite her injury setback at the Asian Games in September, Chanu has shown remarkable resilience in her comeback. The 29-year-old weightlifter holds a personal best of 88kg in snatch and set a world record of 119kg in clean and jerk at the Asian Championships in 2021. This will mark her third Olympic appearance, making her the sole Indian weightlifter representing the country in Paris.

With her exceptional performance at the IWF World Cup, Chanu has proven her determination and skill on the international stage. Her success in the women’s 49kg category has solidified her path towards securing a spot in the upcoming Paris Games. India looks forward to cheering on Mirabai Chanu as she continues to make her mark in weightlifting on a global scale.
