Bundelkhand wheat variety awarded GI tag, a first for agricultural products

The Bundelkhand region in Uttar Pradesh has received its first Geographical Indication (GI) tag for a farm produce – Kathiya Gehu (wheat). The GI tag was conferred after a two-year process, with the certificate issued on March 30, 2024. This indigenous wheat is rich in protein and requires minimal irrigation.

Bhupesh Pal, the Assistant General Manager of NABARD Jhansi, stated that the GI certification application was filed by a local FPO, Khatiya Wheat Bangra Producer Company Limited, with support from NABARD and technical guidance from Padma Shri Rajnikant Rai. The GI tag is a major achievement for the Bundelkhand region and will help promote this nutritious and gluten-free wheat variety.

According to S.K. Chaturvedi, director of research at Rani Lakshmi Bai Central Agricultural University (RLBCAU), Kathiya wheat is prevalent in the region due to its nutritional value and adaptability to harsh climatic conditions with minimal water requirement. The GI tag will enhance the brand value of Kathiya wheat, leading to economic prosperity for local farmers. RLBCAU and ICARDA have also initiated research to develop better seed varieties for increased production.

The confirmation of the GI tag on Kathiya wheat marks a significant milestone for the Bundelkhand region, highlighting the importance of indigenous farm produce. The recognition will not only benefit local farmers but also contribute to the agricultural development of the region. The collaboration between NABARD, local FPOs, and research institutions underscores the efforts towards promoting sustainable and nutritious farming practices in Uttar Pradesh.
