International Mother Language Day is celebrated every year on February 21. This year in 2024, it falls on February 21, 2024, Wednesday. The celebration of International Mother Language Day is done as language leads the foundation block in the process of communication. Thus, respecting each other’s language is significant for effective communication. The world is full of different types of traditions, cultures, and languages.

The movements and protests to celebrate International Mother Language Day did not take place in India, but rather in Bangladesh. Language may seem confusing to the person who doesn’t know it. However, the diversity of languages also depicts the beauty of diversity. Language is the bridge that connects one to another. In a nation like India, where cultural and linguistic diversity prevails, language acts as a beautiful connection.

History

Four students in Bangladesh were killed on February 21, 1952, when they began the movement to make Bengali the official language of their nation. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) General Conference in November 1999 announced the celebration of International Mother Language Day. Later, the General Assembly of the UN also welcomed the celebration of International Mother Language Day.

Theme and Significance

The theme of International Mother Language Day for this year, i.e., 2024 is “Multilingual education – a pillar of learning and intergenerational learning.”

The United Nations wrote the following regarding this year’s theme,

“Multilingual and multicultural societies thrive through the preservation of their languages, which serve as conduits for traditional knowledge and cultural heritage. However, linguistic diversity faces increasing threats as more languages vanish. Currently, 40% of the global population lacks access to education in their native language, a figure that exceeds 90% in certain regions. The research underscores the benefits of using learners’ native languages in education, fostering better learning outcomes, self-esteem, and critical thinking skills. This approach also supports intergenerational learning and cultural preservation.”
