Baisakhi or Vaisakhi is one of the most important festivals which are celebrated in Punjab and Northern India especially by the Sikh community and is also considered to be the Punjabi New Year. The festival is characterized by lively processions, folk music, and langar or community meals, and instills a feeling of community spirit and gratitude. It also symbolizes the beginning of the harvest season. The Sikh community visit Gurdwaras to offer prayers while farmers express their gratitude for having a bumper crop. A number of savories and dishes are prepared and the mood is joyous with dancing, singing and distributing sweets to their loved ones.

Baisakhi or Vaisakhi, also the beginning of the Punjabi New Year, is an important festival and it holds particular religious, cultural, and historical importance. This year the festival will fall on April 13, 2024. The festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervor in Punjab.

Baisakhi also has great significance for the people who practice the Sikh faith because the day is celebrated to mark the formation of Khalsa Panth (the society of the pure) in Anandpur Sahib, Punjab by Guru Gobind Singh Ji in 1699. The Khalsa Panth are warriors who fight against oppression and tyranny and the history is filled with tales of their heroism and valor. Guru Gobind Singh Ji was the last Guru of the Sikh faith and he ordained that the Sikh faith will consider the Guru Granth Sahib as their Guru and follow its teachings. Guru Gobind Singh Ji also abolished the distinction between upper and lower castes and stated that all humans are equal.

Baisakhi is celebrated with great enthusiasm in all parts of Punjab and traditional customs and rituals are one of the highlights of the festival. Agriculture is the mainstay of the state of Punjab and the state is also known as the bread basket of India. Baisakhi also marks the beginning of the harvest in the agricultural calendar and a bountiful crop ushers in a period of prosperity and happiness. In the evening the farmers dance to the tune of drums or Dhols their traditional dance, Bhangra a lively and energetic dance and women folk the Giddha. Community kitchens prepare sumptuous meals and the doors are open to everyone regardless of their caste or religion.
