Report: Apple abandons plans to develop smartwatch displays
Tech giant Apple has reportedly shelved plans to develop display screens for its smartwatch, as per a Bloomberg report. The company has pulled the plug on an in-house project to build screens with microLED technology and is now reorganising display engineering teams, eliminating some roles in the US and Asia.
The display project was part of a broader effort by Apple to design more of its technology in-house. In the meantime, the company is expected to launch new iPad Pro models featuring OLED displays from Samsung and LG.
On a different note, the US Justice Department and 16 states have accused Apple of using exclusionary business practices to maintain the monopoly of its flagship product, the iPhone. The lawsuit alleges that Apple leverages this monopoly to keep prices high for consumers, with the iPhone holding a 65% share of the US market.
The report did not receive an immediate comment from Apple regarding the shelving of display screen plans or the accusations of anti-competitive practices. Apple’s decision to shift focus from developing smartwatch display screens may have significant implications for the company’s future product lineup.
