45 confirmed dead in Bangladesh building fire (Lead)
The death toll in a fire at a multi-storey building in Bangladesh has risen to 45, with the fire spreading to other floors of the building in Dhaka on Thursday night. Health Minister Samanta Lal Sen confirmed the number and stated that most of the injured are critical.
The fire broke out in a restaurant at around 22:00 local time on Thursday, leading to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina directing the health minister to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured. The Health Minister, also the coordinator of the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, stated, “We are trying our best to save them.”
Currently, 14 people are being treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and eight at Sheikh Hasina Burn Institute, with severe burn injuries. Patients are facing complications such as respiratory distress, wound infections, and electrolyte imbalance during treatment.
One victim, Jewel, aged 30, passed away in the intensive care unit of DMCH on Friday morning. The bodies of 39 individuals have been identified, with 32 handed over to families without autopsy. However, the identities of six bodies remain unknown.
Dhaka Additional Deputy Commissioner AKM Hedayetul Islam mentioned, “DMCH authorities are handing over the bodies, with the assistance of Tk25 thousand provided to families of the deceased who are not financially stable.” The situation is still ongoing, as authorities continue their efforts in response to this tragic incident.
