US to withdraw 2,200 troops from Iraq by end of September

The US will withdraw greater than a 3rd of its troops from Iraq inside weeks, its high Center East commander says.

Gen Kenneth McKenzie informed reporters the troop presence can be lowered from about 5,200 to 3,000 throughout September.

These remaining will proceed to advise and help Iraqi safety forces in “rooting out the ultimate remnants” of the jihadist group Islamic State (IS).

Final month, US President Donald Trump reaffirmed that he deliberate to pull all troops from Iraq as quickly as potential.
