‘Disease X’: New Pandemic On Its Way That Can Claim 50 million Lives, Everything You Need To Know

Health experts worldwide have cautioned the entire world that some more devastating pandemics are approaching in the future and COVID-19 was just the beginning. This news has been reported by the Daily Mail.

The man who chaired the Vaccine Taskforce of the United Kingdom, Dame Kate Bingham issued a grave warning. He said that the next pandemic will possess the potential to claim a minimum of 50 million lives. He emphasized that the entire world had been fortunate that the COVID-19 pandemic was not more devastating.

Next Pandemic ‘Disease X’: More Lethal

WHO or the World Health Organisation has anticipated that the next pandemic would be from “Disease X.” The organization also stated that the pandemic may be already in its way. As per WHO data, the COVID-19 pandemic emerged for the first time in 2019. It led to the death of nearly seven million people on a global level.

Dame Kate Bingham has warned that the anticipatory Disease X that is heading its way could be seven times more dangerous than COVID-19. Moreover, she also said that there is the possibility that the next pandemic might originate from a prevailing disease or virus.

Disease X

Drawing attention towards the catastrophe that happened in 1918-19 as a flu pandemic killed 50 million people approximately, she stated, “Today, we could expect a similar death toll from one of the many viruses that already exist. Today, there are more viruses busily replicating and mutating than all the other life forms on our planet combined. Not all of them pose a threat to humans, of course – but plenty do.”

In the current scenario, 25 virus families are being minutely monitored by scientists. Each family consists of thousands of individual viruses. Thus, each virus has the potential to mutate into a lethal pandemic.

Dame Kate Bingham added, “With COVID, the vast majority of people infected with the virus managed to recover. Imagine Disease X is as infectious as measles with the fatality rate of Ebola, which is 67 percent. Somewhere in the world, it’s replicating, and sooner or later, somebody will start feeling sick.”

Way Ahead

The scientists of the UK have buckled up. They already have taken preventive measures and initiated vaccine development efforts targeting ‘Disease X.’ Currently the Wiltshire Porton Down laboratory complex involves around 200 scientists for this job. Their primary focus is on animal viruses possessing the potential to spread rapidly worldwide and infect humans.
