UN chief calls for end to Ukraine crisis

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged an end to the Ukraine crisis at a Security Council meeting marking two years since Russia’s special military operation. Guterres stressed the need for a just peace based on the UN Charter, international law, and General Assembly resolutions.

Guterres emphasized the importance of resolving international disputes through peaceful means and refraining from the use of force against any state’s territorial integrity. He warned about the dangers of the conflict escalating and deepening geopolitical divides, regional instability, and global economic crises.

The conflict in Ukraine has led to a surge in food prices, economic shocks, and a global cost-of-living crisis, impacting developing countries the most. There are also concerns about the potential for a nuclear accident resulting from the conflict. Guterres called for a renewed commitment to the UN Charter and respect for international law to achieve peace and security globally.

“It is time to recommit to the (UN) Charter and renew respect for international law. That is the path to peace and security — in Ukraine and around the world,” said Guterres at the Security Council meeting. The international community must work together to address the crisis and prevent further escalation of tensions in the region.
