The US-British military coalition launched airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen’s Red Sea port city of Hodeidah. The strikes targeted mobile missile launchers in the west of the city, in response to the Houthi group targeting international commercial shipping vessels in the region.
Residents in Hodeidah reported the airstrikes on social media platform X, although the coalition has not officially commented on the operation yet. This comes as part of a series of strikes aimed at Houthi targets following their attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, citing solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
Houthi leader Abdulmalik al-Houthi recently vowed to continue launching missile attacks to disrupt shipping in the region, in an effort to pressure Israel to end its conflict with Hamas. As a result of the Houthi attacks, several vessels including those from the US, Britain, and Europe have been damaged, leading to Washington designating the group as a “global terrorist organisation” in January.
