Congress nominates Rahul Gandhi to contest from Wayanad again; Bhupesh Baghel, Shashi Tharoor, and K.C. Venugopal also included in initial Lok Sabha candidate list

The Congress party has announced its first list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, with 39 nominees from nine states. Rahul Gandhi will contest from Kerala’s Wayanad again, along with other prominent leaders like Shashi Tharoor and Bhupesh Baghel. The list includes candidates from Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Kerala, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim, Lakshwadeep, Telangana, and Tripura.

In the released list, Congress General Secretary (Organisation), K.C. Venugopal, will contest from Kerala’s Alappuzha, where the Congress-led UDF had lost in 2019. The candidates cover a range of demographics, with representation from general category, Schedule Castes, Schedule Tribes, Other Backward Class, and minorities. The age group of the candidates varies from under 50 to 71-76 years old.

The announcement comes after a meeting of the party’s Central Election Committee held in New Delhi on Thursday. The list includes candidates like sitting MP Vincent Pala from Shillong, and D.K. Suresh from Bangalore Rural in Karnataka. This move showcases the party’s strategy for the upcoming polls and aims to secure a strong presence in the Lok Sabha.

The party has strategically chosen candidates for different states to maximize its chances of winning seats in the Lok Sabha. With prominent leaders like Rahul Gandhi and Shashi Tharoor in the fray, the Congress aims to make a significant impact in the upcoming elections. The list release marks the beginning of the election campaign for the Congress party, as they gear up for the challenging polls ahead.
