Tamas Sulyok becomes Hungary’s new president

Budapest, March 11 (IANS) – Tamas Sulyok was inaugurated as Hungary’s new President in a ceremony held at the Sandor Palace on Sunday. The event was marked by a military salute, historical flag procession, and performances.

During his inaugural speech, Sulyok emphasized the importance of upholding core values while fulfilling his new role. He highlighted the Fundamental Law as the guiding principle in his presidency, promising steadfast adherence to its principles.

Sulyok, a former head of the Constitutional Court, was elected as the President on February 26. His appointment came after the resignation of his predecessor, Katalin Novak, in the wake of a child abuse pardon scandal that rocked the country on February 10.

Born in 1956 in Kiskunfelegyhaza, southern Hungary, Sulyok brings a wealth of experience in law and academia to his new position. His election as the President of the Constitutional Court in 2016 attests to his expertise and leadership qualities.
