Italy unveils plan ‘Food for Gaza’ to coordinate international humanitarian aid

In a recent development, Italy along with three multilateral food and aid agencies have launched the “Food for Gaza” initiative to boost international humanitarian efforts in the region. The initiative aims to increase food and health aid in the short term, followed by a focus on long-term human and social reconstruction in Gaza.

Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, shared insights on the initiative during an event held at the headquarters of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The event saw the presence of key figures such as Qu Dongyu, Director-General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation; Cindy McCain, Executive Director of the World Food Program; and Xavier Castellanos, Deputy Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

Tajani highlighted the importance of coordination among these institutions in delivering aid effectively. He emphasized the need for projects and the establishment of a humanitarian aid corridor to facilitate the process. The corridor is set to begin from the Mediterranean island nation of Cyprus, as current airlift efforts are falling short in meeting the needs of Gaza’s citizens.
