Israeli officials to evacuate population from Rafah before imminent attack

Israel is planning to attack Rafah, the Gaza Strip’s southernmost city, and evacuate most residents ahead of the offensive to create “humanitarian islands.” The international community has raised concerns about the potential humanitarian catastrophe this may cause.

Israeli Defense Forces Spokesman Daniel Hagari announced the plan to guide the population of Rafah towards designated areas before launching the offensive, providing basic necessities such as housing, food, and water.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant visited the Gaza Strip to assess the operational situation and observed preparations for a maritime corridor to deliver aid shipments from Cyprus to Gaza. The military is reportedly planning a ground operation in Rafah to target Hamas militants hiding in underground tunnels.

According to the United Nations, Gaza is facing a deepening humanitarian crisis, with approximately one in four of its 2.3 million population at risk of starvation. Since October 7, 2023, over 31,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s offensive, with a majority being civilians, and thousands are missing or trapped under rubble.
