Kenyatta University Road Accident: 11 Died and 42 Injured

Around 11 students from Kenyatta University lost their lives in a bus accident. Moreover, 42 students were injured in the accident that took place in Voi, Kenya on Monday night.

Out of the eleven students who lost their lives, 10 died on the spot, however, one was declared dead at the hospital, reported TimesNow.

The accident occurred when a bus and a truck crashed. The police confirmed that the lethal accident occurred on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, Maungu, Voi, Taita Taveta County.

The public health students were on the bus on their way to Mombasa from Nairobi for an academic trip.

Daffala Ibrahim, the Police Commander of Voi Sub-County confirmed that 42 students who were injured were transferred to the Moi County Referral Hospital and were provided with some urgent medical care.

Police stated, “The driver of the bus was overtaking a fleet of vehicles and it was raining heavily, the bus swerved to the right side of the road to avoid hitting the lorry which hit one side and ripped it off.”

Kenya Red Cross in an official statement wrote, “We are actively responding to a road traffic incident involving a bus that collided with a trailer at Manyatta, past Maungu in Voi Sub-County.”

The pictures of the accident circulated on social media, where numerous netizens expressed their grief.

The former General Secretary and President of Kenyatta University, Teddy Odhiambo Omin Osano expressed also his condolences.

He tweeted, “A sad evening for my alma mater, Kenyatta University. 10 Public Health students were confirmed dead following a tragic road accident on their trip to Mombasa. May we pray for Kenyatta University. May our comrades rest in peace. I implore the students’ fraternity to remain calm.”

According to local newspaper reports stated Nation, the accident was a result of a huge traffic build-up on the highway.

Response and statement from the university administration are awaited.

Capital News reported that around 4,000 people lost their lives in road accidents yearly, as per statistics given by the Police.
