School Teacher Ashley Smylie Death: 14-Year-Old Daughter Accused of Shooting Her Own Mother

A 40-year-old teacher, Ashley Smylie, was killed on March 19, 2024, Tuesday, by her own daughter, Carly Gregg, who is only 14 years old.

Ashley Smylie worked at Northwest Rankin High School.

In 2022, Ashley Smylie was named the New Teacher of the Year at Northwest Rankin High School, as reported by WAPT.

School Teacher Ashley Smylie Dies

On March 20, 2024, Wednesday, the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office announced in a press release that the teenage daughter is accused of killing her mother. Moreover, on Tuesday evening at their home, she also wounded her stepfather.

Ashley Smylie passed away after the shooting, and the 14-year-old daughter fled the scene. The stepfather reported sustaining injuries to his shoulder.

The 14-year-old has been charged with both attempted murder and murder. She was apprehended and taken to the Rankin County Juvenile Detention Centre.

The New York Post reported that authorities stated the teenager was held on a $1 million bond and was charged as an adult.

The Incident Explained 

Bryan Bailey, the Rankin County Sheriff, identified the teenager as Carly Gregg. Bailey provided a detailed explanation and mentioned that they were called to the crime scene around 5 p.m.

Officers found Ashley Smylie dead and Gregg’s stepfather wounded with a gunshot to his shoulder. The stepfather told the officers that when he arrived home, he discovered Gregg holding a handgun and Ashley Smylie dead.

Reportedly, Carly Gregg shot her stepfather when a confrontation between them escalated. The stepfather managed to disarm the teenager. She fled the home, initially running into the backyard and then jumping over the fence.

Officers located the teenager near the home shortly after 5:30 p.m.

Maggie Wade, a WLBT journalist, stated in a Facebook post that Rankin County School officials confirmed Ashley Smylie was a mathematics teacher at Northwest Rankin High School.

Officials are investigating the incident but have not yet revealed the potential reason behind the shooting.

Authorities stated in a press conference that Carly Gregg was scheduled to make her first court appearance on March 21, 2024, Thursday, in county court.
