Rima Das: Characters Start Whispering Stories in My Ear

Filmmaker Rima Das, known for her award-winning films like ‘Village Rockstars’ and ‘Bulbul Can Sing’, is currently working on her latest project, ‘Village Rockstars: Echoing Tales’. In an interview with IANS, she shared her unconventional approach to filmmaking, where stories and characters unfold organically without a bound script.

Das, a one-woman crew who handles writing, directing, producing, editing, and shooting her films, emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity and purity of her movies. Despite receiving critical acclaim and numerous awards for her work, she remains focused on the art of filmmaking rather than succumbing to pressure.

As she navigates the changing landscape of filmmaking post-pandemic, Das acknowledges the need for a separate budget for marketing her films. While her earlier works gained organic buzz, she now recognizes the value of strategic promotion to reach a wider audience.

Having worked with non-actors in her films, Das appreciates their trust and surrender to her vision. However, she also acknowledges the benefits of collaborating with professional actors who can bring out the best in each other through a process of ‘breaking’ and ‘unlearning’.

Reflecting on the evolving nature of the film industry, Das notes the challenges of working on a tight budget like she did for ‘Village Rockstars’. With the rising costs of production and the demand for quality sound and marketing, she acknowledges the necessity of adjusting to the new realities of filmmaking.
