Australia appoints special advisor to review investigation into Israeli airstrike

Former head of Australian Defence Force appointed as special advisor on Israel’s response to Gaza strikes

Canberra, April 8: Retired Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin has been appointed as Australia’s special advisor on Israel’s response to strikes that killed aid workers in Gaza. The announcement was made by Australian minister for foreign affairs, Penny Wong on Monday.

The appointment of Binskin comes after seven World Central Kitchen (WCK) staff, including Australian citizen Zomi Frankcom, were killed in Gaza on April 1 during an Israel Defense Force (IDF) airstrike. Wong stated that Binskin will oversee official investigations into the incident.

In a statement, Wong said that Binskin is eminently qualified to advise the government on the sufficiency and appropriateness of Israel’s actions and any further steps that can be taken to hold those responsible accountable. Binskin will engage with Israel and IDF on the response to the attack.

Australia has expressed its expectations and trust to the Israeli government that the engagement with Binskin will be facilitated smoothly. The government is focused on ensuring that those responsible for the attack are held accountable for their actions.
