South Korean Minister Ready to Hold Open Discussion on Increasing Medical School Quota

South Korean Health Minister Cho Kyoo-hong stated that the government is willing to discuss the increased quota in medical school admissions with doctors if a more reasonable measure is proposed. The plan to add 2,000 seats has led to protests by trainee doctors, impacting public health services.

About 12,000 trainee doctors have walked out of their workplaces to oppose the plan to increase medical school admissions. The government based the decision on scientific research and discussions with the medical community. However, Health Minister Cho indicated a willingness to adjust the quota hike if needed.

“We intend to engage in sincere discussions with the medical community to persuade them and resolve the dispute,” Cho mentioned during a government response meeting. He emphasized the importance of a unified and scientifically grounded proposal to address the issue of increased medical school admissions.

The reform plan regarding medical school admissions has become a significant topic ahead of the parliamentary elections. The ruling People Power Party is focused on regaining a majority in the National Assembly. The government is open to dialogue to find a solution acceptable to all parties involved.
