In a recent phone conversation, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and Italian counterpart Antonio Tajani discussed bilateral relations and regional developments. Amir-Abdollahian highlighted Iran’s role in ensuring stability in the region, while Tajani urged Tehran to exercise restraint in response to an Israeli attack on Iran’s embassy in Damascus.
During the talk, Amir-Abdollahian emphasized that Iran has always played a positive part in regional development and has borne considerable costs to ensure sustainable stability and security. He also called on Italy to use its G7 rotating presidency to address Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank, referring to them as “genocide and war crimes.”
In response, Tajani urged Tehran to exercise restraint following the Israeli attack on the consular section of Iran’s embassy in Damascus. He emphasized the need to condemn such invasions, stating that diplomatic missions should not be attacked. The two diplomats also discussed the importance of ensuring shipping and maritime security in the Red Sea, with Tajani praising Iran’s positive role in resolving tensions in the region.
Amir-Abdollahian and Tajani also acknowledged the growing bilateral ties between Iran and Italy, agreeing to enhance consultations on various levels. Earlier this month, a targeted Israeli strike on the consulate building in Damascus resulted in the deaths of a senior commander of Iran’s Islamic IRGC Quds Force and his deputy, along with five others, raising concerns of a potential retaliatory attack from Iran.
